Something from 2017. It was after seeing some cranes in Hokkaido for the first time. Immature in many ways but I still find myself looking at it from time to time remembering how I was feeling.

One of my favourite works I’ve seen. ‘CBD’ 2010, by Zhou Jie, as a part of the exhibition ‘A Blueprint for Ruins’ @whiterabbitgallery

The moment I encountered the work I recognised the city of Beijing with its signature, often made fun of, 大裤衩building. The realization of a place, of close connection to you, brought lots of feelings already.

Grey ceramics reminisce half dried concrete, and somehow, an imagination of death. In contrast with the growing fungus, reproductive organs (which imbeds so much life), it’s hard to say how much they reject and rely on each other.

A light beige floor, which I initially thought was felt, turns out to be a bed of rice. A soft, comfortable sensation. There’s this subtle smell from the rice, floating in the room. As if you are visiting someone’s home as a guest.

Yet a decayed house, without its owner. Her memory remains; hanging down from the ceiling, floating with the passing wind. No human, but plenty of foreign objects, with their thriving thoughts.

And who are you? Someone who looks down at this city with birds-eye view. As if you see the passing time, crowd, people tumbling down on each other’s body. You are the god. A god who used to live on this very street.

Some thoughts for my own record. And if you are around Sydney, please pay a visit, it’s such a well curated show.

“ Grandma's toothbrushes”

Grandma has these old toothbrushes
She would never throw them away
She keeps collecting, they are next to the stained mirror in her bathroom
“I will use them for something” she says.
A large, crowded jar.

Dad says that when grandpa passed away
He could not sleep for the whole night
And it took him a whole year to recover
We never really talks, but at this moment we did
I somehow remembered those toothbrushes
