A Ring

2021

A Ring (2021) questions wearability. That is asking, how does an object become wearable? Is it essential for jewellery to be worn? Made to resemble the form of an eye screw, A Ring is a sterling silver ring that is attached to the wall. The text “RING” is raised on the inside of the ring. When one wears the ring, the text “RING” imprints on one's finger. The choice of eye screw form is not only due to its functionality, but its common role to hang, support, or frame artwork in the gallery environment.

This work discusses the possibilities of wearability, value and power dynamic. The ring is only a gazed object until it is worn. When worn, the power dynamic changes; What was once carried around, gifted object is now demanding the subject’s body to be compromised for fitting. When the audience leaves the space, while the physical silver ring remains attached to the wall, “RING” is taken with the body to the outside world. Moving beyond traditional notions of the object as a singular, isolated entity, A Ring focuses on creating new subjective and objective experiences through the interactions between the object and its associated environment. The temporality of the act of wearing enhances such experiences, reflecting on the changing sentiments between the body and the object.
